Discover this incredible poetry community, run by the poets and for the poets in Hawke's Bay.
This wonderful poetry community thrives on collaboration, creativity, and mutual support. Regular events such as readings, workshops, and open mic nights foster a strong sense of camaraderie and artistic development.
Our friends at the Common Poets Society run a monthly open mic at Common Room Bar. It's a warm, friendly atmosphere, led by our Hawke's Bay producer Rosheen FitzGerald. You can check out dates and times by following Motif or the Common Poets Society on Facebook.
Every year we run Hawke's Bay's regional poetry slam competition. Local poets battle it out for the title of Slam Champion. The winner of this event each year is invited to compete at the New Zealand Poetry Slam national competition. As always this is a supportive and friendly event that anyone is welcome to take part in.
Discover the Hawke' Bay Poetry SLAM
The best way to connect with poets and poetry is in a close, warm, expertly curated showcase. We host national and international touring poets who want to share their work in Hawke's Bay. We've run Pride events in Hastings, featured award winning poets in Napier, and run school performances in Wairoa and Flaxmere.
SLAM is just one format within the wider scene of poetry and performance poetry. It's a fun way to meet people, share your work, make an event of poetry and fill a room with people who may never go to a traditional 'reading'.
Discover the fun of an open-mic night, from poets to musical acts and everything in between. Open mic nights are for everyone, at any stage. If you want to simply enjoy an evening of discovery or even present your own performance, this is the place for you.
A showcase event is a dedicated event to showcase a poet, poetry or related art of some form. Keep an eye out for these incredible events to see one-of-a-kind artists present inspired work and show case the best a region or artform has to offer.
